MailGuard Mounting and Assembly

Your MailGuard mailbox can be mounted on a 4x4 wooden post (suggested) or to most other types of posts.  MailGuard can also be mounted directly to the outside wall of your home or place of business, on brick, wood, cement, or aluminum siding etc.  Mailboxes must be instructionsplaced to conform to state laws and highway regulations.  We suggest you contact the local Post Office before erecting the security mailbox to ensure its correct placement and height on at the street.

Mounting to a Post:

  • Before starting installation, cut the top of the post at an angle as illustrated here.  This is to prevent water from accumulating between the post and the mailbox.
  • Bury the 4x4 post in the ground to a depth of approximately 42 inches below ground surface.  You may use cement to secure the post, if allowed by your state and local laws and postal regulations in which case the post only needs to be buried 18" below the surface.
  • Mounting holes are located on the back wall of MailGuard and are accessed through the lower door opening.  Using the indentation track in the back of MailGuard as a guide, mark the proper height and position of the 4 mounting holes on the post (see illustration).
  • Drill 4 holes in the post in the marked positions.
  • Attach MailGuard to the post using the 4 rust-proof bolts supplied.

Mounting to a flat wall:

  • Contact your local post office for the required height of the mail box on the wall.
  • Using the mailbox itself as a template, mark the position of the 4 mounting holes..
  • A wooden filler may be needed to fill the space between the back of the mailbox and the wall.
  • Attach the mailbox to the wall using the 4 rust-proof bolts.

Outgoing Mail:

For the safety of your outgoing mail, we suggest that you take it directly to the post office or to a postal service collection box.

Flag Assembly:

Insert the nylon bushing, smaller diameter down, into the largest hole in the flag.  Place the flag on the flag hole in the upper part of the left side of the mailbox.  Use the provided #20 x 3/4" screw to attach the flag to the mailbox.

Lock Assembly:

To assemble the lock, place the key cylinder threads through the lock opening in the lower door of the mailbox.  Place the thread jam nut onto the key cylinder and tighten down.  Take the locking arm and position its square opening over the square in the key cylinder.  Place the #20 x 1/4" screw into the key cylinder and tighten.  We suggest you orient the lock so that the door locked with the key is in the 12 o'clock position and the door unlocked when the key is in the 3 o'clock position.

Upper Door Handle Assembly:

Insert the 2 bolts in the 2 holes on the inside surface of the upper door.  Place the knob on the outside of the face of the upper door and line up the 2 bolts with the 2 holes in the knob.  Tighten the 2 bolts. Insert the faceplate in the front of the door handle to cover the ends of the 2 bolts.
