Burl
Burl wood is taken from a tree that has a growth on the trunk of the tree, often developing into a branch. This growth causes the fibers of the wood to develop in unusual ways creating a beautiful and interesting grain.
Chamfered
A cut that is made in wood or some other material, usually at a 45° angle to the adjacent principal faces.


Column
The top of the column is the "capital". If the capital is highly decorated, with curling, leaflike, ornate carvings, it is Corinthian. The Ionic column is artistic and elegant with rolled volutes. If the capital is plain it is Doric.
Corbel
A corbel is an architectural bracket or block projecting from a wall and supporting (or appearing to support) a ceiling, beam, or shelf.
Dentil Molding
A dentil is one of a series of closely spaced, rectangular blocks that form a molding. Dentil molding usually projects below the cornice, along the roofline of a building. However, dentil molding can form a decorative band anywhere on any structure.

Hard Chine
The part of the boat below the waterline and the shape of the stern or transom. If the chine is rounded, it is a soft chine; if it squared off, it is a hard chine.
Ogee
A compound, S-shaped profile. There are a number of variations on the Ogee profile, with shoulders on the edges or points in the middle of the profile.
Pilaster
A pilaster is a rectangular support that resembles a flat column. The pilaster projects only slightly from the wall, and has a base, a shaft, and a capital.
