Mail removal door moved to front (upper "square).
The column mailbox is a major piece, designed for those with notable properties. The original of this mailbox originated in Germany around 1889. By 1906 it was displayed prominently in front of main post offices in 23 municipalities as the official collection box for the Postal Service - Posten Benden.
Highly customizable, the standard version has a large incoming mail slot in the front and large mail removal door at the rear. The mail "reservoir" occupies the entire rectangular portion of the body of the mailbox. A shelf is provided at mid-height so that incoming mail is ordinarily held in the upper half of the compartment - approximately 13" x 16"h. The shelf can be removed to allow for roughly double the mail capacity at times when you're away - to 13" x 31" - a huge amount of mail. Each sand-cast solid aluminum mailbox is custom made for you, and no two are exactly alike - although they are indeed each very, very similar to our photos.
Numerous other customization options can be ordered. This photo shows a customer's mailbox with an intercom system installed. The photo of the black mailbox (click small photo at left) shows an optional extended top section with outgoing mail compartment and address plaque. Other options include a front mail-removal door, and cast-in-the-mailbox addresses at the top.
